4 Tips for Drivers to Help Look After Your Car Glass

When it comes to looking after your car, it’s important not to neglect the glass. Other than a quick clean and polish now and again, most of us don’t really think about car glass maintenance, but it’s such an essential part of your driving experience. From keeping a clear view, to protecting you from debris, look after your car glass and your driving experience is so much more pleasant. Whether you do a lot of driving through Leicester city centre, or prefer rural drives around Sherwood Forest in Nottingham, it’s important to follow these tips for looking after your car glass.

1.       Look out for chips, cracks, or scratches

It’s important to regularly check your front and back windscreen, as well as your side windows, for any damage. We often don’t notice small chips or cracks until they start to spread, and then you might need to replace the windscreen rather than just opting for a repair such as using resin. Never ignore chips or cracks, as if you have a small collision, such as bumping something while parking, the weakened glass is much more prone to shattering which can cause injuries.

2.       Check your wipers

Windscreen wipers are important to your car because:

·        They help maintain visibility in wet weather

·        They clean your windscreen, so you can see properly

·        They get rid of bugs and debris

·        They’re essential to passing your MOT

Windscreen wipers don’t need a lot of maintenance, just a wipe with a damp cloth when you clean your car, but if they start to squeak or aren’t cleaning properly, it might be time to replace them. This should be done before the rainy months in the Midlands, especially around autumn when there’s a lot of debris such as leaves. This can also avoid scratches from old wipers, which can lead to you needing car glass replacement, which saves you money in the long run and ensures your glass is kept safe.

3.       Clean your windscreen

In order to get the best visibility from your glass, keep them clean by either using specialist wipes or a microfibre cloth. Don’t use kitchen roll, as this can cause streaks, and avoid anything rough that can lead to scratches and mean you need car door glass replacement eventually. You might want to also avoid automatic car washes, as they can be rough on your glass. Hand car washes are gentler.

4.       Get rid of water spots

Water spots can sometimes appear once you’ve washed your car and can obscure your view. Use a glass polish and microfibre cloth to keep them clear. This is a good time to look for damage and decide whether you need windscreen chip repair. Many cars in the Midlands can suffer damage when driving on major roads such as the M6, and it’s sometimes hard to see to see it until you’re polishing.
